The first castle was started in 1420 as a triangular shaped complex with a moat. When the castle expanded, the old parts were not torn down, but built over. Which means the first moat was filled in and built over.
Today, we took a two hour drive to Sedan, France to see the largest surviving castle in Europe. After a touch of driving downtown in a 600 year old city, we found the parking lot. The entrance was inside the walls, so we hiked around the outside, then uphill to the plaza and the entrance.
The tour was winding down by now. The guide loved to chit chat with the other guests, and we felt bogged down. The tour was physically demanding and by the time we got back to Yutz, we all were exhausted. Which is why the pics are up today.
The turret in the bottom pic comes up out of the ground. I got film of this, but no stills.
